The Piano Player

One story us kids always loved hearing about was Mom's one and only gig in East Dubuque, appearing one night only. Since she was dating a very handsome guy named Harvey Hanson, he was the only guy taking his girl home! They were out with the Hanson brother's and their dates when they walked into a bar that was practically empty. One of the guys saw the piano and suggested that Mom should sit down and play a few tunes. Well, it wasn't long before the bar was filling up with patrons from other bars coming in to listen to the popular tunes of the day. We always asked Mom if she kept the tips they were trying to give her and she said she did not. But she always talked about her Claim To Fame in East Dubuque. Another of Mom's, Claim To Fame, occurred in The NCO Club on an Army Base outside of Saigon during the Virtnam War where her future son-in-law was stationed. The special request I received from Ed was this. "Could you tape about 90 minutes of your Mom playing the piano? The guys would really appreciate something that reminds them of home". So I got a brand new cassette tape and sat next to Mom at the piano while she played old tunes and some new ones of the 70's. She even played a couple of Beatle songs for them. She was a cool Mom even then! So at least once a week the guys would shout, "Hey Eisbach, throw on that piano tape of yours!".
