Obituary for Arthur Miller Jr.

Arthur Miller Jr.
Arthur J. Miller, Jr., 77, of Dubuque passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 pm Friday at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 1795 Jackson Street, Dubuque, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. Visitation will also be held Saturday at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery.
Art was born January 23, 1940 at the McGrath Farmstead in Lattnerville, Iowa, son of Arthur and Annetta (McGrath) Miller Sr.
He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Dubuque. Art received his teaching certification and master’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
On May 30, 1964, he married the love of his life, Sally Koehler at Immanuel Congregational.
Art began his nearly 40 year teaching career teaching in Elizabeth, Illinois in 1963. He then taught social studies at Thomas Jefferson Junior High/Middle School from 1964 to 2002, where he also coached many boys and girls sports over the years.
Art was an active and dedicated volunteer and held many positions with the Dubuque Education Association, IntegrUS Credit Union (fka Dubuque Teachers Credit Union) and Immanuel Congregational. For the last 14 years he has volunteered with the SHIIP program at UnityPoint Health assisting seniors with selecting their Medicare prescription benefits. He also has been a strong supporter of the Dubuque Arboretum and Dubuque Historical Society.
Art enjoyed traveling with his wife and family across the United States and around the world during numerous family vacations, cruises and bus trips. An avid gardener, he shared his vast knowledge and the bounty of produce and fruit to friends, neighbors and family. He always took time to make sure a “lovely lady” got a “lovely rose.”
He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Art was always a loyal fan of his Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Iowa Hawkeyes through the good and bad seasons alike.
He was survived by his wife, Sally Miller of Dubuque; four sons, Jonathon (Beth) Miller of Dubuque and their children, Jonathon Caleb and Koehler; Joel (Alisha) Miller of Dubuque and their children, Kyler and Aiden; Kurt (Amy) Miller of Davenport and their children, Hayden and Addison; and Adam (Valentina) Miller of Dubuque and their children, Boris and Anastasia.
He is also survived by three siblings, Robert (Janice) Miller, Nettie (John) Combs, and Charles (Marie) Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at UnityPoint Health ICU and Dr. Schope and Dr. Salas for their care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Arthur J Miller Jr Social Sciences Award in care of the Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools, 700 Locust St., Ste. 195, Dubuque, IA 52001
