Obituary for Roberta Comer

Roberta Comer
Roberta "Bonnie" Agnes Comer, 96, of Dubuque passed away on December 12, 2017 at Bethany Home.

A celebration of Bonnie's life will be held on Friday December 15, 2017 at 11:00 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Family and friends may visit at Westminster Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

Bonnie was born on March 7, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa daughter of Agnes Bradley Brady. After her mother passed away at the age of 36 she and her sister were nurtured by their mother's kind-hearted younger sister, Mary Bradley, who lovingly took on the task of raising two little girls on part of the original farmstead of Cornelius and Amanda Bradley. Bonnie attended a one-room school house through grade school and graduated from Dubuque Senior High in 1938 where she was affectionately referred to as Itty Bitty Bonnie Brady. After attending the University of Dubuque for two years she married her high school sweetheart, Glenn Comer, on September 20, 1941. Together they were blessed with three sons and one daughter and worked and resided on the farm where Bonnie had grown. After 38 years of marriage Glenn passed on to be with his Lord on October 14, 1979.

While her husband worked the farm, Bonnie kept busy raising chickens until they got too messy, took pride in her huge vegetable and flower garden, enjoyed canning vegetables for the winter months, cooking large family meals and baking the best desserts a family could ever dream of. She tended to the farm with respect and kept it looking wonderful. Bonnie also loved every holiday and put up decorations for each one, big and small, for her cherished family to enjoy. However, her birthday was truly a day to be celebrated. She had a little girl spirit and enjoyed every moment of her special day.

Bonnie was a lifetime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served as Deacon and taught many years as a Sunday school teacher. She also volunteered for The Finley Hospital Auxiliary and mentored children at St. Mary's school. After her youngest left for college, Bonnie worked for the Dubuque Telephone Answering Service for several years. As her eyesight faded from the effects of Macular Degeneration she found much joy attending activities at Tri-State Independent Blind Society.

Left to treasure her loving and positive nature is her son Wendell of Dubuque and his children Lisa Comer of Saginaw, Michigan, Terri Comer of Washington D.C. and Brad Comer of Alpharetta, Georgia; her son Wayne (special love, D'Ann) of Houston, Texas and his children Gregory (Sandra) Comer also of Houston, and Lindsay (Wyatt) Thomason of Austin, Texas; her daughter Nancy (Marty) McNamer of Dubuque and their children Will and Tony Goodmann and Joseph McNamer of Dubuque, and Jason McNamer of Denver, Colorado; and finally her dear, 100 year old sister, Mary Radle of Union, Kentucky. Similarly, she was blessed with many great-grandchildren which include Andy, Julia, Andrew, Rafe, Jacob, Mia, Brody and Ellie. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother and husband, Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved son Gary, her daughter-in-law Janis, and her brother-in-law Woodrow Radle of Tipp City, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, please consider having your memorials sent to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Bethany Home, Tri-State Independent Blind Society, Hospice of Dubuque, or by simply doing an act of kindness for someone in need.

Special gratitude goes to Hospice of Dubuque for warmly embracing our mother, and to each and every employee of Bethany Home for tenderly and compassionately loving Bonnie.

The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
