Eugene J. “Gene” Siegert, 87, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at his home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 23rd at The Church of The Resurrection with the Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM Sunday, January 22nd at the funeral home that Gene built, the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd, with ceremonies by the Past Commanders of the American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque being conducted at 4:00 p.m. A Parish Scripture wake service will begin at 5:30 P.M.
Gene was born on April 7, 1929 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Edmund and Marlene (Ashworth) Siegert. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1947, attended Loras College, and graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, MO in 1950. On May 9, 1953, Gene married Marilyn “Jayne” Frohs at the Church of The Nativity.
Gene’s passion for funeral service began with his grandfather, James Ashworth, who co-founded Bennett & Ashworth Funeral Home located on Seventh and Bluff Street. Gene would frequently help his grandfather and years later took over the business, which became the Siegert Funeral Home.
As time passed, Gene realized a need for a more modern facility to properly serve the Dubuque community. He understood that Dubuque’s growth was on the west end and in 1978 Gene established what is now their current location on JFK Road.
For over 60 years, Gene was dedicated to the funeral industry. He served as past President of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association and served three terms as the governor’s appointee to the Iowa Board of Mortuary Examiners. He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association and the Dubuque County Funeral Directors Association. Gene was among the first responders to assist in the disaster of United Flight 232 on July 19, 1989 in Sioux City, IA. He received a certificate of recognition from governor Terry Branstad for outstanding service following the tragedy.
Gene was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the US Air Force Strategic Air Command from 1951 to 1955. He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque and a relentless advocate for our veterans and their wellbeing. Gene served as a commissioner with the Dubuque County Veteran Affairs Commission for three decades, serving as chairman on numerous occasions.
Gene was a licensed pilot, member and past president of the Flying Funeral Directors of America, the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
He was an active member of Resurrection parish, having served on the parish council and as a Eucharistic Minister and lector. He was also a member of Dubuque Council 510 Knights of Columbus – Dubourg Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, the Dubuque Serra Club, La Society 40 et 8 Locale No. 632, past member of Thunder Hills Golf & Country Club, and Dubuque Squires Club.
Through all of his accomplishments in life, his marriage and family made him the most proud. He was always eager to listen and engage in conversations on what was new in the lives of his grandchildren. Gene and Jayne were a steady team and created a balance between the business and family. At holiday gatherings Gene would often smile at Jayne and say, “Look what we created.”
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years, Jayne of Dubuque; his children: Jim (Jill) Siegert of Pleasant Hill, MO; Gina (fiancé John Moran) Siegert of Dubuque; Paula (D.J.) Rapp of LaMotte, IA; Tom (Lynn) Siegert of East Dubuque, IL; Bob (Shannon) Siegert of Dubuque; and Karen (Josh Elsenraat) Siegert of Springfield, MO; his grandchildren: Todd Siegert, Seth (Vicki) Siegert, Ben Seeling, Luke (Mauren) Seeling, Paula Seeling, Jess (Chad) Steve, Kate (Adam) Uptegraph, Ellyn (Jeremy) Olsen, Eryn Rapp, Drew (Angie) Siegert, Calli (fiancé Josh Ramler) Siegert, Lauren Siegert, Sarah Siegert, Brad (Lindsay) Siegert, Kelly (Michael) Fegan, and Nathan Siegert Elsenraat; 13 great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Roy Sherman; and six nieces and nephews.
