Don C  Kirschbaum
Don C. Kirschbaum, 91, of Dubuque passed from his earthly home into God’s eternal home on Monday, November 21, 2016 at Luther Manor. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church where visitation will also be held Saturday from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. Burial will be in Guttenberg City Cemetery where military rites will be accorded at 2:00 p.m.
Don was born November 19, 1925 in Guttenberg, Iowa, son of Carl and Viola (Schrunk) Kirschbaum.
Don served during World War II as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles.” His division fought throughout the European Theatre; participating in many conflicts; including Battle of the Bulge and securing of Hitler’s “Eagles Nest.” He also served with the 82nd Airborne Division.
Returning home, Don married his loving wife, Ardeth Haberichter on July 26, 1947. He finished his service to our country as a Staff Sargent, with the honor of becoming a military escort service honor guard, returning those fallen comrades back home to the United States.
Returning to civilian life, Don enrolled at Washington State University where he graduated with a degree in forestry. Following graduation, he returned to the Dubuque area and began a sales career in the millwork industry.
Following his retirement in 1987, he enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and painting.
He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, American Legion and VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Ardeth of Dubuque; four children, Timothy (Renee) Kirschbaum of Marion, Ill., Diane (Bill) Welsh of Cedar Rapids, Barbara (Brian) Munson of Dubuque and Lora (Kenneth) Goedken of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren, Jared (Ali), Joel and Anna Kirschbaum; Alissa, Will and Christopher Welsh; Mallory (Craig) Fraaken, Jacob (Tricia) and Carl Munson; and Amanda (Michael) Shoemaker, Zachary and Nathan (Kayla) Goedken; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one great grandson.
