Obituary for Maurice H Mellon

Maurice H. Mellon, 90, of Dubuque, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 19 at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11 a.m., at the church prior to the funeral.

Maurice was born on October 1, 1926 in Dubuque to James and Gertrude (Baumhover) Mellon. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Elaine Schroeder on July 23, 1947 in McGregor, Iowa.

He owned and operated Mellon’s Tap in Dubuque for a number of years. Later, Maurice was a custodian for the Dubuque Community School District. After retiring, he was employed at Tandem Tire and Barron Motor Supply.

Maurice was a member of Immanuel Congregational UCC. He was also a charter member of VFW Post #9663.

He was a simple man who most enjoyed being around people and socializing, whether it be through bowling, horseshoes, or cribbage. He and his wife Elaine liked traveling and cooking together as well.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; their children Maurine (Kenneth) Harris of Bellevue, Colleen (Robert) Steinmann of Dubuque, and David (Mary) Mellon of Davenport; grandchildren Michael (significant other Shelly Cullen) Harris, Lori (significant other Danny Whipple) Daniels, James (fiancé Beckie Long) Harris, Kerry (Robert) Preece, Ben (Kate) Steinmann, Courtney (Aundra) Robinson, and Andrew Mellon; great grandchildren Kevin Mueller, Sarah Rogers, Reilly and Brenna Harris, Hunter and Kendra Harris, Talia Robinson, and future baby Micah; great great grandchild Lilith Gilberts; brother in law Merlin Schroeder; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Floyd (Ilene) Mellon, James (Virginia) Mellon, Florence (Joseph) Roth, Robert (Norma) Mellon and John Wayne Mellon.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ennoble Manor, Dr. Jared Frieburger, and the VFW Post #9663 for all their care and concern.
