Catherine A. “Anne” Van Etten, fondly known as “Mrs. V.”, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at ManorCare Health Services at the age of 86.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chuck Layton officiating. Private burial will be at a later date. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Anne was born on August 22, 1930 in Blandinsville, Illinois, the daughter of Leo and Catherine “Pat” (Pittenger) McKone. She graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in Home Economics and began her life of educating others in Havana, Illinois. It was there that she met her “love”, Arnold J. Van Etten. Together they taught, went back to school, and found their forever home in Dubuque, Iowa.
Mrs. “V” taught in the Dubuque Community School System for over 30 years, educating students in sewing, cooking and life in general. She was an enthusiastic, creative and dedicated teacher, who made each student her focus.
Anne supported, enjoyed and participated in a wide variety of groups through the years. She shared her leadership and service talent with PEO, Bridge Club, Hempstead Booster Club, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, VNA Jr. Board and the retired “Jones” teacher gang.
Anne will continue to touch the lives and be celebrated by her family which includes her “love”, Arnold J. Van Etten of Dubuque; Julia A. Van Etten, Hudson, WI, Gregory D. Van Etten, Lenexa, KS, and Jennifer K. (Dennis) Hammel of Fairfield, IA; grandchildren, Vanessa (Chris) Patton, Reason and Madison Davis, Griffin, Riley and Olivia Hammel; Anne was awaiting her first great- grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Grace Bowers.
Anne’s family wishes to deeply thank all of the caretakers at ManorCare, who are like second family, for their perseverance, humor, encouragement, gentle hands, and love that has been shared with Annie and her family.
In lieu of flowers an Anne Van Etten memorial fund has been established to be distributed to her favorite charities.
The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd. is assisting the family.
