Obituary for Elinor Gilloon (Gilloon)
Elinor Gilloon, 95, formerly of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 24 at Church of the Nativity. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service.
Elinor was born on September 26, 1920 in Elma, Iowa, daughter of Judge Frank D. and Mae J. (Keefe) Gilloon. She graduated the from the former Visitation Academy, attended Clarke College and received her B.A. degree from St. Catherine University in Saint Paul, MN.
She had a long career as a teacher in the Chicago public schools. After retirement, she worked for several years at Water Tower Place in public relations.
In Chicago, she was a member of Holy Name Cathedral parish. She was also a member of the Chicago Catholic University Club, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Renaissance Court of the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Retired Teachers Association of Chicago.
For the last 4 years of her life she lived in Mishawaka, IN, close to her niece Amy (Gilloon) Zwerneman and husband John.
She is survived by 22 nieces and nephews, 4 of whom are Dubuque area residents, Frank D. Gilloon III, Robert G. Gilllon (Lourdes), Arthur F. Gilloon (Penny), and Ms. Marilyn Gilloon. She is also survived by 59 grand nieces and nephews, and 36 great grand nieces and nephews.
Elinor was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and sisters-in-law, Judge Frank D. and Nan Gilloon, Dr. J. Robert and Marguerite Gilloon, and Dr. Allan G. and Joan Gilloon; and a niece Maura Gilloon.
