Richard J  Sullivan
Richard J. Sullivan, 88 of Dubuque died Thursday, January 7, 2016 after a long illness.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 19 at Grand View United Methodist Church, where friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. A Masonic service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps. League. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd. is in charge of the arrangements.
Richard was born on January 9, 1927 in Dubuque the son of Richard J. and Kathleen (Orr) Sullivan.
He served in the United States Army during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific.
Richard graduated from the University of Dubuque, earning his Bachelors of Arts with a minor in chemistry.
On Sept. 1, 1950 he married Janet (Buchan) at First Presbyterian Church in Chicago; she preceded him in death on August 4, 2014.
Richard was extremely active in the Dubuque community. He was a member of the Masonic Temple and Boy Scouts of America. He served on the Dock Board, Dubuque County Soil and Water Conservation Commission, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was very proud of educating members of our community in water and hunter safety through various programs in the Tri- States and local schools; teaching at Eco- Meet in concert with the DNR and Army Corps of Engineers. He also volunteered with the local Red Cross.
Many happy days were spent with family and friends in the Coachmen Camping Club and the Mobile Nobles unit of the Shriners.
Surviving are his daughters, Elizabeth Ann Sullivan, of Dubuque and Sandra Lynn (Max) McCullough, of Waterloo, IA; son, Richard John Sullivan, of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Jennifer, Erin and Laura McCullough; two great grandchildren, Ella and Lucas; and brothers, Paul (Judy) Sullivan and Tom Sullivan.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and 7 siblings.
