Leona J. Watt, 96, of Dubuque, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Eagle Pointe Place, Dubuque.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Resurrection Catholic Church, Dubuque, with the Rev .Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 31, at the Egelhof, Siegert, & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 J.F. Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where there will be a parish wake service at 7pm. Friends may also call Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Leona was born in Festina, IA on August 13, 1919, daughter of Edmund S. and Matilda (Pitzenberger) Huinker. She was raised on the family farm and attended school in Calmar, IA. She graduated from the Waterloo School of Beauty Culture in 1940 and worked as a beautician and salon manager for Pitzi’s in Waterloo.

She married James W. Watt on November 13, 1944, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Waterloo, IA. He preceded her in death on July 3, 1971. After Jim’s passing, she became a New York Life Insurance Representative and Field Underwriter, where she served her clients with integrity and dedication for over 35 years.

She was a member of the Dubuque Association of Life Insurance Underwriters, Catholic Daughters of America, and an active member of Resurrection parish. She lived at 2540 Crissy Drive for 52 years where she enjoyed raising fresh vegetables, canning, and cooking. Her specialty was baking delicious apple pies.

She is survived by four children; Connie (Gerry) Vaassen, of Dubuque, James D. (Deb) Watt of Lake Wylie, SC, Gary (Barbara) Watt of Cary, NC, Carolyn Maiers, of Rosemount, MN; her grandchildren, Jodi (Dan) Krepfle, Jeff (Dr. Amy) Vaassen, Jacqueline (Scott) Dunn, Dr. James (Lara) Watt, Leann Watt, David (Caily) Watt, and Kelly Maiers; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Dennis (Alberta) Huinker and David (Martha) Huinker; sisters, DeEtta Hemesath and Gladys Elsbernd, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Huinker

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Paul Huinker and Alvin Huinker.

A Leona J. Watt Memorial Fund has been established.
