Donald J. Sisler, 89, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 893 McCormick St., died Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Unity Point Finley Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Monday, August 3, 2015 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 8:00 am to 10:15 am Monday at the church.
Donald was born August 14, 1925 in Dubuque County, the son of Charles and Jeanette (Watters) Sisler. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1942. He married Mary Meyer on September 2, 1946. She preceded him in death on February 1, 2014.
Don began his career in the construction trades as an electrical supply salesman. He then became a carpenter with his brother-in-law Elroy Hinz before forming his own contracting business, Don Sisler and Sons. He was an avid sports fan, especially the Green Bay Packers. He was a life-long gardener known for the numerous tomato plants he cultivated (over 100 most years).
Surviving are his children: Bette Sisler of Eagan, MN and Don (Mary Kay) Sisler, Jr. of Dubuque; daughter in law Laurie Sisler of Lombard, IL; six grandchildren, Sarah Sisler of Wausau, WI, Mark (Melissa) Sisler of Chicago, IL, Laura (Frank) Ahlbach of Dubuque, Jake Sisler, Kevin (Kellen) Sisler, Ellie (Matt) Zawicki, all of Chicago, IL; and one great grandchild, Margot.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary; his son Jack; five brothers, Roger, Arnold, George, Joseph, Elmer Sisler; and four sisters, Mary Sisler, Grace Tigges, LaVonne Hinz and Lois Ferriera.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stonehill Care Center or Hospice of Dubuque.
