Dorothy M. Schlueter, 77, of Asbury, Iowa passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2015, at UnityPoint Health (Finley Hospital) in Dubuque, IA.

Dorothy was born on November 29, 1937, in Menominee, Illinois to Elmer and Helen (Lolwing) Wubben. The second oldest of eleven children, Dorothy grew up in a modest house in Illinois farm country where she honed her work ethic performing nearly every type of farm chore imaginable, including milking the cows, feeding the chickens, and herding the horses. Elmer, a diehard fan of the Chicago Cubs, rewarded his family for their hard work by taking them on family vacations to Wrigley Field to cheer on the beloved home team. As a result, Dorothy became a lifelong fan of the Cubs and managed to pass on this affliction to a few of her own children. When not working on the farm, Dorothy attended a one-room schoolhouse from 1st through 8th grade. Although Dorothy acknowledged that this might not have been the highest quality education, her experiences here instilled in her a life-long commitment to education. She attended boarding school and subsequently nursing school, which is where she began to cultivate her passion for caring for those in need. Whether it be a Hospice patient, a friend, or one of her own children, Dorothy had a remarkable ability to connect with people in need, simultaneously conveying true empathy for their suffering while radiating a strength of will that inspired them to face their challenges. Dorothy’s strength of character was inseparable from her faith in God, and she dedicated her life to helping others recognize the importance of this connection. The fruits of this dedication can be seen in the lives of her nine children, her seventeen grandchildren, and in the countless individuals she counseled throughout her life, including those who seek help at the SOURCE, a non-profit she co-founded ten years ago, to provide a place where people struggling with addiction can go to find understanding, recovery, community, and encouragement.
Dorothy married Thomas W. Schlueter on May 9, 1964, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dubuque, and their marriage lasted over 50 years. Dorothy cared selflessly for Tom up until his recent death on January 26, 2015. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Mary Kathryn Schneider and Carol Schulting, and her brothers-in-law, Arnold Honkamp and Ewin Schneider.
Surviving are her children, Thomas (Ellen Neuhaus) Schlueter and their children Nathaniel, Cy Thomas and William of Green Bay, WI; Mary Kay (Bill) Meyer and their children Olivia, Sadie, Meredith and Faye of Dyersville, IA; Susan (Dan) Wirtz and their children Josephine and Eva of Atlanta, GA; Angela (David) Wilson and their children Lucas and Owen of Martinsville, VA; Carl (Hayley Bush) Schlueter of St. Paul, MN; Janet (Frank Merritt) Gammage and their children Leo and Greta of Asbury, IA; Helen Schlueter of Chamblee, GA; Peter (Nicole Westphal) Schlueter and their son Elliot of Denver, CO; and John (Jennifer) Schlueter and their children Henry, Grant, and Samuel of Chicago, IL.
