Obituary for Mary A McGeehan (Vallandingham)

Mary A McGeehan (Vallandingham)
Mary Alacoque (Vallandingham) McGeehan, 79, formerly of 16487 Forest Gate Road in Dubuque, died Friday, March 6, 2015 at Anam Glen in Rockford, Illinois due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday March 10th at Resurrection Church, Dubuque with interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday March 10th at Resurrection Church. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary was born on May 3, 1935 in Annapolis, Maryland, daughter of Joseph Bernard and Marie (Callahan) Vallandingham. She married William D. McGeehan January 9, 1960 at St. Mary’s Church, Annapolis, Maryland.

She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis and received her Bachelor of Arts from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (now Notre Dame of Maryland University).

Following college she worked as a stewardess for United Airlines until taking a position as an elementary school teacher. With the birth of her first child she elected to stay home and use skills from both careers to focus on raising her children.

She had a love of language and of the arts that she was happy to share with those around her. She was an avid supporter of the Dubuque Symphony as well as many of the music programs in the area. She was a long time member of the Union League Club of Chicago and enjoyed participating in book clubs, travel and playing bridge with friends.

Mary was strong in her faith and served a number of years on the parish council at Resurrection Church. She was a Dame of The Holy Sepulcher. Her faith and desire to serve others led to many opportunities to assist in fund raising or to volunteer with various organizations.

Surviving are her children, Michael (Dawn) McGeehan of Allenstown, NH, Jane (Jeff) Marner of Rockford, IL, Brian (Kelley) McGeehan of Timonium, MD, and Susan (Eric) McGeehan of Minneapolis, MN, and 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William (2008), brother, J. Bernard Vallandingham (2012), daughter, Kathleen (1971), her parents and all earlier generations.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dubuque Mission, Maria House or Dubuque Food Pantry. As Mary was fond of saying, “A thousand thanks!”
