Arthur E.(A.E.) Cooper, 93, of 2295 Coventry Square, Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on September 29, 2014 at Luther Manor. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. October 1, 2014 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1755 Delhi St., Dubuque, Iowa, with Pastor Carter Hill officiating. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the Church. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Sumner, Iowa. Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Rd., Dubuque, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
Arthur was born on April 19, 1921 in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Adelbert "Bert" and Josephine (Anderson) Cooper. He was raised in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School in 1939 where he lettered in basketball and tennis. On November 15, 1952, Arthur married the love of his life, Phyllis Wittenburg in Sumner, Iowa.
He was a United States Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII from 1942 until his discharge in 1947. That same year, Arthur moved to Dubuque accepting a position with C.B. Trewin, Inc. He purchased the business from Mr. Trewin in 1953, renaming it Dubuque County Abstract and Title Co. He and his wife have continued to own and operate the business for over 60 years.
Arthur has been a member of the Dubuque Golf and Country Club since 1948 and was Past President and Trustee. He was also a member of the Grenlefe Country Club of Haines City, Florida; the governing board of the Iowa State Golf Association; a 25 year member and secretary of both the Dubuque Homebuilders Association and the Dubuque Board of Realtors; the National Association of Realtors; the Iowa Land Title Association and the American Land Title Association.
He was an avid and accomplished golfer, competing for many years in tournaments and golf events throughout the Midwest. Arthur also enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis of Dubuque and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ruth Clewell of Waverly, IA and Grace Thatcher of Iowa City, IA.
An Arthur E. Cooper memorial fund has been established with proceeds going to his favorite charities.
