Phyllis was born March 9, 1926 in Colesburg, Iowa, daughter of Bernita (Grimes) and Donald Wessel. She was educated in and graduated from the Colesburg schools. She moved to Dubuque in 1943 and worked as a meter reader for Interstate Power Co. She married Robert Schultz, Sr. on Nov. 17, 1945 in Dubuque. Bob died Jan. 1, 1983.
She later worked for Robert’s River Rides. She traveled up the Mississippi River from Biloxi, Mississippi on the maiden voyage of the “Mississippi Belle”, working to get it ready for its tenure in Dubuque. She was a member of the Finley Auxiliary, volunteering at Finley for many years. She was active in many bowling leagues during her life, as a bowler, youth instructor and league secretary. Phyllis was a talented seamstress and made many of her own home furnishings and clothes (and clothes for her children and grandchildren!). She was a former member of Center Grove Methodist Church and made many lifelong friends through activities there, including her euchre group. She was a wonderful grandmother, making each of her grandchildren feel like her favorite, and attended many of their activities.
Phyllis is survived by a daughter, Susan Minger and her children: Jeff (Sharon) Minger, Ben (Gail) Minger, Sarah (Alan) Horak; a son Robert “Buck” (Sheila) Schultz and their son Zach (Angie) Schultz; a son Don (Bette) Schultz and their children: Chenelle (Kyle) Bechen, Keith (Sheri Anthony) Gloden, Craig (Cara) Gloden; and11 great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, son Douglas in infancy, brother Garlyn “Bud” (Geri) Wessel, sister Bette (Carl) Ackman, brother-in- law Merlin “Bud” Schultz, and great-grandson Mitchell Horak.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Finley Hospital or Center Grove Methodist Church. In keeping with Phyllis’ wishes, she donated to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa.
Special thanks to Dr. Hillard Salas and the staff at Sunset Park Place for their compassionate care.
