Obituary for Hazel J Zimmer (Hoppmann)

Hazel J. "Heidi" Zimmer, 91, of Assisi Village died Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Stonehill Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 7:00 Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2659 JFK Rd. where a scripture wake service will be recited at 6:30.

Hazel was born on November 6, 1920 on a farm near Cuba City, Wisconsin, the daughter of Otto and Bertha (Berning) Hoppmann. She grew up in the Cuba City area and graduated from the Sinsinawa Mound. Eventually Hazel moved to Dubuque and started working at H & W Trucking. During her years at H & W, she met a fellow worker named Harold Hans Zimmer and the two fell in love. On November 16, 1940 they were married at Nativity Church. Hazel later worked at the Battery Factory to assist in the war effort and in 1962, she began her 20 years of service at the Xavier Hospital. She retired in 1982 following the closing of the hospital.

Hazel was a long time and active member of Sacred Heart Parish and a Girl Scout leader. She was a great family woman who enjoyed travel and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.



Surviving are her daughter, Mary Lou (Denny) Hiemenz of Rockford, IL., and their children, Christine (Paul) Schaver, Tanja (David) Mead and Stephanie (Brian) McGuire; her son, John (Jane) Zimmer of Dubuque, IA., and their children Lisa (Mike) ODonnell, Laura (Vlad) Galiano, Ann (Brad) Kegler and Brian Zimmer; her son-in-law, Tom Kutsch of Belleville, IL. and his children Terri (Mark) Lowe, Michelle (Jeff) Dickinson and Jeff (Ann) Kutsch. Also surviving are 18 great-grandchildren; her brother, Donald Hoppmann of Dubuque, IA. and her sister-in-law, Helen Hoppmann of Dubuque, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold N. Hans Zimmer; her daughter Donna Kutsch; 2 brothers Harold and Loren Hoppmann and 2 sisters Lou Kelly and Dorothy Ferring.

A Hazel J. "Heidi" Zimmer memorial fund has been established.

The Zimmer family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Assisi Village, Hospice of Dubuque and Stonehill Care Center.
