Tom N. Sarvis, 77, of Dubuque died Monday, March 11, 2019. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 3200 Asbury Rd with the funeral service following at 11:15 a.m. Military rites will be accorded at the church immediately following the service.
Tom was born October 13, 1941 in Delta, Iowa, son of Lloyd and Elma (Ulin) Sarvis. He attended Tri-County Schools in What Cheer, Iowa, and Iowa Weslyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa where he studied mechanical engineering. He moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a small hotel desk clerk before taking a "jack-of-all-trades" job at the Los Angeles Teachers' Credit Union.
In 1966, his credit union career was interrupted by the Viet Nam War. Tom returned to Iowa and enlisted in the Army. He served as a medivac helicopter pilot during Tet Offensive, and was deployed until 1967.
After the war, he resumed his passion of working for members of credit unions. He started as an examiner, and then joined Alcoa Employees Credit Union in Bettendorf. In 1984, he became CEO of DuTrac Credit union, guiding it as it grew for 23 years until his retirement in 2007.
Tom married Darleen Pankratz, November 1, 1969 in Deep River, Iowa, and treasured her for nearly 50 years. He is mourned and remembered by many, but especially by Darleen, his two sons, Brian (Angela) Sarvis of Indianola, Iowa and their children, Emily and Ben and Jonathan (Amy) Sarvis and their children, Carson and Aaron. He is also cherished by his Texas family, Loyd (Mary Ann) Pankratz of Boerne, Jean (Martin) Mohr of Fredericksburg, and dozens of nieces and nephews. He was with us for the passing of his parents and his sister, Carol Rodriquez.
Tom enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and cruising with Darleen to far-away places. He always made time for family, friends, and coworkers, spinning many a yarn, all of which had just enough truth to be believed. He was a volunteer for many organizations, including St. Peter Lutheran Church as a Stephen minister, AARP as a tax aide, S.C.O.R.E. as a small-business adviser, Hills and Dales as a member of the board of directors, and the Boy Scouts of America as a father and mentor to many.
In lieu of flowers, a Tom Sarvis memorial fund has been established.
The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
The entire family is most grateful the kind, patient, compassionate, and excellent care of Dr. John Whalen, and all the staff at Tri-State Dialysis Center.

Tom was a great human. He always had laughter and joy in his heart and smile on his face. I worked to help sell the Jackson Street Dutrac building in the 1990's, and he was very much the professional. He talked me into purchasing it so we could sell off the drive-up building. As well, we were both former Army helicopter pilots, him much more a true hero in that regard, and I enjoyed his stories about flying, only a few of Vietnam. Sorry to hear of his passing, and that we were unable to make it to his wake. We offer our sincere condolences to the family. "General Bob" and Nancy Felderman.

I first met Tom through the auto business. No matter when he walked into the room it lit up with his laughter. Always a smile and a "little story"! LOL Heaven is a brighter place now and smoke that pipe and enjoy it my friend. Kent
