Obituary for Eileen R Klein (Schmitt)
Eileen R. Klein, 95, of Balltown, Iowa, died Monday, March 11, 2019. Visitation will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where a parish wake service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic church in Balltown. Burial will take place at the St. Francis church cemetery.
Eileen was born on August 22, 1923 in Bankston, IA the daughter of Ben and Rose (Nickl) Schmitt. She married Ralph Klein on November 18, 1942 at St. Clements Catholic Church in Bankston. He Preceded her in death on April 17, 2005. Eileen attended St. Clement High School in Bankston where she played on the 1941 Archdiocese championship women’s basketball team. She was a lifetime member of the St. Francis Rosary Society. Eileen was a fantastic cook and spent her Friday nights cooking at the Barn in Sherrill. She also volunteered her time working with the Dubuque Women’s Food Service at the county fair for over 35 years. Eileen received the State of Iowa Award for Volunteerism in 1988 from former Gov. Terry Branstad. In her spare time enjoyed quilting and doing crossword puzzles. Eileen loved spending time with her family and visiting and hearing about what they have been up to.
She is survived by her children Judy (Jack) Gansemer of Balltown, IA and Thomas (Linda) Klein of Dubuque, IA; five grandchildren Ann (Dan) Topf of Ames, IA, Steve(Gina) Gansemer of Balltown, IA, Cathy (Paul) Hannan of Rochester, MN, Tara (Larry) Goedert of Dubuque, IA, and Justin (Jackie) Klein of Lafayette, CO; ten great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and two sisters Geraldine Sanner of Hattiesburg, MS, and Rita Kueter of Dubuque, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ben and Rose Schmitt and her brother Melvin Schmitt.
