Mary J. (Jett) Greenawalt, 85, of Asbury died peacefully Friday, February 8, 2019 at Grand Meadows. In keeping with her wishes, a private family memorial service will be held.
Mary was born June 9, 1933 in Patoka, IL, daughter of Alfred and Viola (Scates) Jett. She graduated from Sandoval High School, then attended Stanford-Brown Business College in St. Louis. She worked in the City Hall of Normandy, MO for the City Attorney, and a Certified Public Accountant.
Mary married Tom Greenawalt on March 6, 1954 in St. Louis, MO. A week later they moved to Dubuque and have been residents ever since, except for the two years Tom was in the US Army.
Returning from Germany in 1956, Mary worked until 1959 when she became a stay at home mom, volunteering for many committees and organizations over a span of 50 plus years.
While the kids were young, Mary was involved in Scouting, P.T.A., teaching Sunday School, Confirmation classes, Civic Theatre, and Rams Booster Club at Dubuque Senior High. Her kids could always count on her to be at their game and school activities.
She embraced volunteering and was involved with the Iowa Chiropractic Auxiliary, Sunshine Circle, PEO-Chapter MP, Chairman of the Women's Division of the United Way, member of the Board of Directors at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club, Women's golf group, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Council, Warburg Theological Seminary Fund Appeal, Republican Central Committee, Board of Directors of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, Trans National Golf Association, and Secretary/Treasurer for Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Charity Guild. She volunteered for many other organizations, receiving recognition from the Telegraph Herald.
She enjoyed keeping in contact with her family, reading, Bible Studies at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, genealogy research, bowling, golf, hiking at Mines of Spain, E.B. Lyons and fishing. She loved theatre, symphonies, flowers and bird watching.
Mary and Tom traveled to many places outside of the United States during their marriage. They traveled to every state of our country, but were always happy to return home to Dubuque.
She is survived by her husband Tom of Asbury; daughter, Kimberly Williams of Tulsa, OK; son, Dr. Ronald (Tonia) Greenawalt of Las Vegas, NV; Grandsons, Ethan and Gage Williams of Tulsa, OK and Dakota Greenawalt of Las Vegas, NV, Zachary Greenawalt and great grandson Cooper Greenawalt of Reno, NV, and one granddaughter, Tasheena Greenawalt of Las Vegas, NV.
She was also survived by a sister, Dorothy Anderson of Pleasant Gap, PA; one brother, Beryl (Helen) Jett of Salem, IL and a sister in law, Saralee Clausen of Racine, WI; and many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Wisconsin, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters, and three nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Luther Manor Foundation or a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to express a sincere thank you for your prayers, to Hospice of Dubuque, the caring staff of Luther Manor Grand Meadows and all who have called to extend sympathy. Your calls have meant a great deal. Thank you for the personal notes and monetary memorials for non-profit organizations. If you wish to reach us by e-mail, please do so at
