Obituary for Walter Schlichtmann

Walter J. Schlichtmann, 86, of Dubuque died Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Dubuque Specialty Care. There will be no public visitation. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.
Walter was born September 4, 1932 in Dubuque, son of Claus and Adele Schlichtmann. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was deployed to South Korea for 18 months.
He married Eleanor Reisen on August 15, 1953.
He worked at John Deere for 30 years.
He was mechanical genius and was able to build his own home. He loved using his mechanical expertise on cars and motorcycles. He was a member of the Hawkeye Motorcycle Club and enjoyed doing the sound and time trials at the Dickeyville Hillclimb. He also had a passion for tube radios and their repair and restoration. It is said that some men are Jacks of all trades and master of none, but Walter was master of all.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Schlichtmann of Dubuque; three children, Gary (Bridget) Schlictmann of Dubuque; Dr. James (Elaine) Schlichtmann of Iowa City and JoAnn Vize of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary (Lindsey) and Abraham Schlichtmann; Anna and Grace Schlichtmann; Colin, Ryan, Desiree Hannig; and Calvin Vize; three great grandchildren, Ethan, Aylana Schlichtmann and Violet Hannig; a sister, Marita Hermann; brother in law, Milton (Judy) Reisen; a sister in law, Karen Schlichtmann and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother and sister in law Clarence and Ellen Schlichtmann; sister, Marie Schlichtmann; brother in law, Milton Hermann, and two nephews, Jon Schlictmann and Jake Jones.
