Donald K  Jewett
Donald K. Jewett (Don), 92, formerly of Birchwood Drive and Hoyt St., was peacefully called to heaven on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Stonehill Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 16, 2018 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, with burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Asbury, Iowa. Friends may greet the family at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church from 9:00AM to 11:00AM Thursday prior to the funeral mass at 11:00 AM.
Don was born on December 7, 1925 in Dubuque, IA the son of William and Lillian (O’Brien) Jewett. He graduated from Senior High School and excelled in many sports, instilling his love of sports in all of his children. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served two years as Seaman First Class in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He worked for John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years, retiring in 1990.
On November 29, 1947, he married Marcella A. Wernimont at St. Philomena’s Church, Asbury, IA. Together they traveled the world, with one trip to Pearl Harbor which he referred to as “very special”. Don loved to play cards, especially cribbage and euchre. He was also a Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. You could always find Don tending to his yard on beautiful days. He was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed spending time with his large family.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marcella, and his eight children, Shirley Hansberger of Memphis, TN; Dave (Sandy) Jewett, Asbury, IA; Steve (Linda Locher) Jewett, Asbury, IA; Gail Wilkinson, Davenport, IA; Helen (Bob) Gednalski, Asbury, IA; Bill (Julie Wilhelm) Jewett, Sun Prairie, WI; Dan (Susan) Jewett, Gloucester, VA; Trish (Phil Brennan) Jewett, Dubuque; 18 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren; his brother, Jim (Joan) Jewett, his sisters-in-law Kay (Ron) Jewett and Pauline Wernimont and his brother-in-law, Mel Lolwing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ron, a sister-in-law Barb (Jim) Jewett, and daughter-in-law Sandy (Bill) Jewett.
