Condolences

Condolence From: David Arbogast
Condolence: Don was a great mentor to us in DeMolay. I have many fond memories of my times with DeMolay and with Don. Although it has been many years (almost fifty) the memories are fresh and are cherished.

Condolence: Uncle Don, most of the time I spent with you was when I very young. I remember a vey kind man with a great sense of humor who made everyone feel welcomed and important. My favorite memory of you is when you used to make little goblets out of mint wrappers when we went to coffee. I was too young to figure out how to do it and spent years trying to get it right. To the rest of my family and chosen family, in Don and Lois and Lew’s honor I promise to help people in need when I can, to open my home and my heart to others, and to always keep learning something new. The rest of us will have to be kinder and more compassionate to make up for Don’s absence in the world.

Condolence: I met Don through DeMolay. My brother, Daniel, and I were many of Don's DeMolay sons and he was a second Dad to both of us. He was easy going, quick to laugh, and led by example. He was a great role model, guiding so many young men to be leaders, community members, and to be kind and considerate of others. He was quick to come to the aid of his friends and DeMolay sons. Years after DeMolay, while I was still living in the Dubuque area, I relished opportunities when I happened to run into Don. During those chance encounters he was always quick with an invitation to take a break and catch up with one another: "Let's get a cup of coffee and a piece of pie", he would say. A simple act of generosity was his chance to catch up on news and to make sure all was good. I think of Don and my other DeMolay dad (D. Keith Robertson) often. Don was a great role model and I try to emulate the best of his qualities. Thank you so much for all you did for so many of us, Don! Requiesce in pace, mi amice.

Condolence: My great uncle Don. My favorite memory is being in public with him and him being mistaken for Harmon killibrew. Happened a lot. He would always smile and sign autographs. I think he got a big kick out of that. Rest easy!

Condolence: I connected to Uncle Don on many levels -- mostly, though, because, like me, he never had biological children. Also like me, however, he had many children who thought of him as a parent. They called him dad and grandpa. To all the family -- biological and otherwise -- and friends, I offer my prayers and condolences from Uganda, Africa.
