Sylvester J. “Fess” Otting, 66, of Dubuque died Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 pm Monday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Spirit Parish-Holy Ghost Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.
Fess was born May 16, 1951 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Emil and Annamae (Jackson) Otting. Married Peggy Carroll on May 9, 1970 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
He lost both his legs in Viet Nam while serving in the US Marine Corps. Upon returning from Viet Nam, he worked for Dubuque Wilbert Vaults.
Fess took everything life threw at him in stride. He enjoyed bowling, the outdoors and was a Cubs and Bears fan. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Otting of Dubuque; two children, Dwayne (Suzanne O’Neil) Otting of Cascade and Michelle (Frank) Montoya of Glendale , Arizona; six grandchildren, Madison Heim-Otting, Lane Otting, Emma Otting, Erica Montoya, Alexis Montoya and Jaden Montoya; a great grandson, Ryker Fagan and two former daughters in law, Sherry and Tera.
He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Weber of Hazel Green, Wisc., Elizabeth “Betty” Otting of Waterloo, Emil (Ruby) Otting, Jr. of Dubuque, Margaret (Johnny) Maize of Oklahoma, Raymond Otting of Dubuque, Rosemary Heim of Dubuque, Racheal (Jim Lorence) Bartle of Dubuque, Phillip (Melissa) Otting Potosi, Wisc., Grace (Michael) Brade of Dubuque, Helen “Pixie” (Mark) Mitchley of Dubuque, and Christine (Kevin) Light of Rewy, Wisc and many nieces and nephews.
