Elizabeth O  Helling (Knepper)
Elizabeth O. “Bette” Helling passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 4, 2017 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK with Rev. Daniel Knepper officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum, Mt. Calvary. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Bette was born in Fillmore, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Hosch) Knepper. She graduated from the Visitation Academy. On November 7, 1947, Bette married Anthony A. “Tony” Helling Jr. at Scared Heart Catholic Church, Fillmore, IA. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1992. Bette, along with her husband, opened their first restaurant, “Tony’s Café” in 1951. The two went on to own and operate the original three Sandy’s Drive In’s in Dubuque and the Dodge House Motel, Restaurant and Lounge.
Bette was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish was an avid bridge and euchre player and enjoyed playing the slots at various casinos around the country with family and friends. The highlight of every year was planning and preparing for the annual Knepper family picnic at various parks in Dubuque.
Surviving are her children, Tony (Diana) Helling of Dubuque; Beth Hunemuller of Cedar Falls, IA and Sue (Kevin Caldwell) Helling of Surprise, AZ; her grandchildren Krista (Rob) Eckert and Nick Helling both of Davenport, IA, Wil Hunemuller of Des Moines, IA and Elizabeth Hunemuller of Cedar Falls, IA; her great grandchildren Owen and Noah Eckert; her sister-in-law Virginia Knepper of Cascade, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her granddaughter Madison Rae Hunemuller; 2 brothers and 7 sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Bette Helling memorial fund.
Bette’s family extends a special thank you to all of her caregivers, especially Dianne B. and Allison.
