Obituary for Christian M Gantenbein

Christian M Gantenbein
Chris M. Gantenbein 62, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd.
Chris was born on August 28, 1954, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Russell and Cecelia (Engling) Gantenbein. He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and Loras College. Chris worked at the former Dubuque Packing Company to pay for college and then started a career as a life insurance agent. On November 7, 1975, he married Judy Kirk at the Church of The Nativity. The most important thing in life for Chris was FAMILY. His children were the love of his life and now his grandchildren were his new love and he never ever missed any swim meets, baseball games, or basketball games. He was a fun-lover. Chris was an excellent woodworker and loved working in his yard. He was an avid reader and instilled the love of reading to his children and grandchildren. He was a huge Iowa Hawkeye, St. Louis Cardinal, and (ex) Steeler fan and loved going to games with family. Chris enjoyed his workouts at Farrell’s but most importantly the friendships that were formed. Chris was a member of St. Columbkille parish.
Surviving are his wife, Judy of Dubuque; his children, Abby (Marty) Kluesner of Farley, IA, and Jacob (Angela) Gantenbein of Dubuque, IA; his grandchildren, Benjamin, Ryan, Colin and Olivia Kluesner; his sisters, Carol Gantenbein of LeClaire, IA, Sandy (Jim) Burns of Plano, TX, Geri (Ernie) Gerlach of Hattiesburg, MS, and Nancy (Chip) Bliss of Dubuque, IA; his sister-in-law, Melody Gantenbein of Keller, TX; his brothers- and sister-in-laws, Jim (Chris) Kirk of LaCrosse, WI, John (Christy) Kirk of Dubuque, IA, and Kathy (Bob) Kieffer of St. Louis, MO; many nieces and nephews and his very special “grand doggie” Cooper.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Gantenbein; his father- and mother-in-law, Gordon and Joyce Kirk, and a brother-in-law, Kevin Kirk.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Dubuque Humane Society.
