Paul J. Frommelt, 83, of Dubuque, passed away on Sunday February 26, 2017 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday March 4 at 10 am at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Archbishop Jerome Hanus will officiate. Friends may greet the family on Friday March 3 from 3pm – 8pm at the church, where a prayer service will be held at 7 pm.

Paul was born on August 2, 1933 in Dubuque, the second child of Julia (Lowe) and Cyril Frommelt. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1952 and attended Loras College. He served in the Army from 1953-1955. Paul married Betty Breitbach on November 24, 1955. They were blessed with and are the proud parents of eight children.

After returning from the Armed Forces, Paul worked in the family business, Frommelt Industries, until his retirement in 1992. Paul cherished his Catholic faith and attended daily mass. He volunteered his time as Director of Development for the Archdiocese of Dubuque. He helped raise a significant amount of money for Catholic education and the Retired Priest Fund. He was past president of the Board of Regents at Loras College. He was a member of Dubuque County Right to Life and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Paul was also past president of Nativity parish council, a mentor in the jail and prison ministry, and, along with Betty, served as a member of the Archdiocese of Dubuque Pre-Cana team for seventeen years.

Paul loved the Dubuque community and served on numerous boards including the Dubuque Recreation Commission, the Airport Commission and the Dock Commission. He served as the president of the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce and was also past president of the Dubuque Golf and Country Club. He was a former board member of American Trust and Savings Bank and a Wahlert High School Board of Education trustee.

Survivors include his wife Betty; two daughters, Mary (Tony) Burbach of Dubuque and Katie (Matt) McClish of Cincinnati, Ohio; six sons, Paul (Geri) of Fairfax, Virginia, Peter (Michele) of Elm Grove, Wisconsin, Steve of Orlando, Florida, Chris (Nancy) of North Reading, Massachusetts, Mark (Susan) of Chanhassen, Minnesota, and James (Julie) of Edina, Minnesota; 25 much loved grandchildren and five great grandchildren; his sister Mary Wendt of Appleton, Wisconsin; Nick (Toni) Frommelt and sister-in-law Nancy Frommelt of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Julia and Cyril Frommelt, brother John Frommelt, brother-in-law Jim Wendt, and his in-laws, Claretta and Leon Breitbach.

Paul was an avid golfer and a diehard fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Wahlert Golden Eagles.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Family Catholic Schools or the Paul and Elizabeth Frommelt Scholarship Fund at Loras College.

Special thanks to all of Paul’s caregivers during the past year.
