Lawrence W  Van Natta
Lawrence (Larry) Van Natta, 71, of Dubuque, died from complications of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 9:40 pm at Finley Hospital.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion, Post 6. Visitation will be at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 18, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a parish wake service.

Larry was born on December 13, 1944 in Dubuque to Reoa and Donald Van Natta and Cal Holzer, all of Potosi, Wisconsin. He attended various elementary schools in Wisconsin prior to moving to Dubuque, where he graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, Class of 1963.

He enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably from 1964 to 1968. He served on the USS Wright CC2, based out of Norfolk, Virginia and Boston, Massachusetts. While in port, he was a naval ambassador at the Boston Children’s Hospital.

After discharge, he worked at Del Farm Foods and then at John Deere Dubuque Works. During layoffs from John Deere, he worked at Klauer Manufacturing, Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home and Cascade Forestry. He was a good provider for his family.

In 1969, he met his future wife, Linda Noel. Both were volunteers for the Red Cross flood disaster in Dubuque.

In 1970, Larry was confirmed a Catholic. In early 1971, he was married to Linda at St. Raphael’s Cathedral by Archbishop James Byrne.

Larry was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, the UAW Local 94, UAW Region 4 Veterans Committee, Dubuque Auxiliary Police (where he received a mayor’s commendation for serving the City for over 25 years), American Legion Post 6, Dubuque Citizen’s Band Radio Club and was a demonstrator of blacksmithing every year at the Froehlich, Iowa Foundation Fall-Der-All. He also was a donor for the Iowa Donor Network.

He loved God and country and advocated for disabled veterans whenever he could. He was honored and humbled to receive a Quilt of Valor in 2015. He also had a profound love and respect for anyone with any type of disability. He was a wonderful guardian to his older, disabled sister, Elaine. He loved to mentor children and teach them how to fish, hunt and shoot archery.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda, his daughters, Lori (Tom) Kirkpatrick, Kate (Steve) Dean, son, Scott (Rachel) Van Natta and daughter-in-law Sarah Van Natta. He is also survived by grandchildren Mallory and Allison Morris, Jacob, Logan and Riley Dean, Caleb Van Natta and Chase Van Natta. He was a loving master to his faithful dog, Buster.
Larry is also survived by his brother, Robert (Lorraine) Van Natta of Potosi, WI. his special aunt, Helen Wentz of Woodruff, WI, many special cousins on the Wentz side of the family, sister-in-law Nancy Eisbach, brother-in-law Gary (Betty) Noel of Jefferson City, TN and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son, Anthony (Tony) Van Natta, his parents, his sister Elaine Van Natta, several special aunts and uncles, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Florence Noel, brother-in-law, Peter Eisbach and aunt and uncle Elmer and Rosemary Friedman.

A Lawrence Van Natta Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to especially thank Heidi Davis, RN, Finley Home Care; the Nursing, Respiratory and Social Worker staff at Finley Hospital; Quality Medical Care of Dubuque; John Hartmann, D.O.; Douglas Hornick, M.D.and staff at UIHC and especially Victoria Famuyide, M.D., and her nurse, Jennifer, at Grand River Medical Center.
