Obituary for Virginia Zahina (Smith)

Virginia Zahina (Smith)
Virginia M. Zahina 92, of Hawkeye Care Center and formerly of Sunset Park Place and 2284 Theda Drive, died Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Hawkeye Care Center. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. where a time of reflection will be held at 6:45 p.m. Private funeral services will be held.

Virginia was born on May 19, 1924 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Orval and Mary Gladys (Winders) Smith. She married Joe Zahina on July 29, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on October 11, 2009. Virginia was active for many years in the Girls Scouts of America as troop organizer, consultant and co-leader at Nativity Parish. She was an avid golfer, enjoying many years on local and surrounding courses with family and friends as well as league golf at Thunder Hills with her beloved husband Joe. Virginia looked forward to the annual girl’s Amana weekend trips each July with her 3 daughters. Monthly game days were fun for her, Joe and Virginia’s siblings. It was important for Virginia to keep family close and strong. Her grandchildren called her their rock. She had many close and loyal friends that gathered with her on a regular basis. Her apartment was full of people, talk and laughter. She was the glue that held everyone together. Virginia had many stories to tell of growing up on the farm and riding her horse, Billy. She woke up one morning recently and said “It’s a good, good day. I want to go for a ride in the woods.” Virginia saw God’s hand in all things around her and would share that with family, friends and even strangers. Her concern for others is a testimony of her life. She wanted people to feel comfortable and safe, and was always saying “God is always taking care of me.” Virginia was employed at Neisner’s Dime store and Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. as operator and service representative. In 1951, she began employment with Dr. Wayne Moldenhauer, DDS and became active in the Dental Assistant Association serving in many capacities on the state and local levels. In November of 1986, Virginia joined the practice of Dr. Frederick and Dr. William May as a receptionist, retiring in February of 2009.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Sandra (Alan) Courtney and Susan Elliott both of Dubuque, IA and Judith (Steve) Roberts of Clive IA; 8 grandchildren, Travis Courtney, Megan (Jeff) Saul, Christopher (Blanca) Roberts, Justin Roberts, Nathan Roberts, Toby (fiancé’ Jamie) Rhodes, Jessie (special friend Heather) Elliott and Ted (Robyn) Oberhauser; 19 great grandchildren; her sister, Darlene Wells of Maquoketa, IA and a brother Kenneth (Donna) Smith of Peosta, IA also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque or the Colts Drum and Bugle Corp.

Virginia’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs at Sunset Park Place and Heritage Manor, to mom’s special forever friends and “DA girls”.
