Obituary for Marjorie Urell- Erhart (Beohm)

Marjorie Mae (Beohm) Urell-Erhart of Dubuque, 93, passed away peacefully at Stonehill Care Center on January 30, 2016.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Church of the Nativity with Msgr. James Miller and Msgr. Wayne Ressler concelebrating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 Monday at the church. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Marge was much loved by her immediate and extended family, as well as a host of lifelong friends. She was born on August 10, 1922 in Greeley, Iowa, eldest daughter of Alice (Rowell) and George A. Beohm. She attended Greeley Consolidated School and graduated valedictorian of her class in 1939. Marge received a full scholarship to Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, but decided instead to enter Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque. After graduating in 1942, she worked as an RN at Mercy Hospital for a short time before taking a position at Missouri Pacific Hospital in St. Louis. Upon returning to Dubuque, she accepted numerous private duty assignments. Later, after raising her children, she was a nursing supervisor for fifteen years at Holy Family Hall, an infirmary for the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque.

On May 6, 1943, she married Frank J. Urell at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Edgewood, Iowa. They moved to St. Louis for a year while Frank was in basic training for the Army Air Corps and awaiting deployment to Italy during WWII. Together they shared 49 wonderful years until Frank’s passing in a car accident on March 8, 1992.

Marge wed Vincent L. Erhart of Dubuque at Nativity Church on March 31, 1995. Presiding was Msgr. Wayne Ressler, pastor at that time. Marge and Vince enjoyed fifteen fun-filled years of family, friends, golf, travel and wintering in Arizona. Vince passed away in April of 2010 at Stonehill Care Center.

A member of Nativity Parish for almost 70 years, Marge was also a member of its Guild and Rosary Society; as well as a continuing member of the Mercy Nursing Alumni Association. She maintained membership in Lacoma Golf Club, Ladies Association and Golf League. Marge was most proud of having been instrumental in founding the Dubuque County Association for Retarded Children in 1953, which would grow quickly to a membership of more than 100 parents. She and Frank remained active in the association long after the passing of their own developmentally challenged son, Kenny, in 1954.

Marge is survived by two children, Robert F. (Mary Kay) Urell and Kathryn A. Norman, both of Dubuque; five grandchildren, James R. (Kerry) Urell of Dubuque, Julie A. Urell of Woodbury, MN, Sarah E. Norman of Boston, Heather A. Norman of Dubuque and Jennifer S. (Erik) Edwards of Racine, WI; two great-grandchildren, Owen and Elliot Edwards; and a sister, Leona F. (Donald) McGirk of Rockford, IL.

Also surviving are her stepchildren, Virginia (Ron) Hoefer and Mary Anne (Bill) Weidemann, both of Dubuque, John (Patricia) Erhart of Alamo, TX, Jim Erhart and Maureen Sheedy, both of Honolulu, Bob (Toni) Erhart of Keokuk, Terri (Rick) Kern of Minneapolis, Peg (Tom) Klun of Lakeland, MN, Carol Erhart and Zulkiffili Abu, both of Dublin, CA and Donna Erhart of Minneapolis; 19 step grandchildren and 14 step great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews in both families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Kenneth J. Urell; two infants at birth, Patrick Joseph and Margaret Ann Urell; a brother, Merle G. Beohm of Hemet, CA; two sisters, Relda M. (Gilbert) Philipp of Worthington and Gertrude A. (William) Kraus of Dubuque; a son-in-law, Wayne A. Norman Jr. of Dubuque; two brothers-in-law and a stepson, Bill Erhart.

Memorials may be directed to Nativity Church, Stonehill Care Center and Hills & Dales, all of Dubuque.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Marge’s physician, Dr. Brian Sullivan; nurses, Tabatha and Loralee; Hospice of Dubuque and the nurses and staff at Stonehill Care Center for their extraordinary care and support.
