Clara K Hauber

Clara K. Hauber, 95, of 3345 Daykin Court, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday,
July 19, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2659 Kennedy Road.
She was born on May 12, 1915, in Dubuque, daughter of Peter J. and Mary (Vitzthum) Schmitt. She married Everett A. Hauber on May 20, 1935, at St. Mary's Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1998.
Clara managed the National Tea Co. during World War II. She then opened and operated, with her husband, the Knotty Pine Motel, which was the first motel in Dubuque. They later opened and operated the West Pine Motel and Saddle Club and then the Terrace Motel. Clara and Everett also started the Regal Limousine Service, which was the first limousine service in Dubuque.
She was involved in the Iowa Chapter of the American Motel Association and an active volunteer with the American Red Cross for 45 years. Clara also was a long-time member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish and United Commercial Travelers Association. She was very involved with the Dubuque County Fair for
50 years. She won Best of Shows for baking and canning, and received hundreds of blue ribbons.
Surviving are two sons, James T. (Mary) Hauber and E. Thomas Hauber, both of Dubuque; five daughters, Joan A. (Larry) O'Toole, of Newport Beach, Calif., Carole S. Stoewer, of Long Beach, Calif., Nancy A. Watson, of Dubuque, Barbara J. (Edward) Mickelsen, of Moline, Ill., and Jean (Ted) Joslun, of Waukegan, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Lawrence and Thomas O'Toole, Kathryn and Stephen Stoewer, Kristin Carlson, Stephanie Krinock and Brian James Hauber; 10 great-grandchildren, Andrew and Jillian Stoewer, Matthew, Madelynn and Stephen Carlson, Madison, Grace and Chloelle O'Toole, Clarissa and Jacob Krinock; two sisters, Evelyn Hillery and Mary Hostert, both of Dubuque; and a brother, George Schmitt, of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gerald Stoewer; her sister, Armella "Bobbie" Kluck Bracket; and two brothers, Bernard and Peter J. Schmitt.
Memorials may be given to American Red Cross of the Tri-States, Dubuque County Fair, and the American Heart Association.
