Louis J Wiederholt

ST. DONATUS, Iowa -- Louis J. Wiederholt, 93, formerly of St. Donatus, died peacefully Monday, July 12, 2010, at Dubuque Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 16, at the St. Donatus Catholic Church. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 390 N. Grandview Ave., Dubuque, where there will be a scripture wake service at 3 p.m. and the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1916, in Louisburg, Wis., son of John and Elizabeth (Weber) Wiederholt.

Throughout his life, Louis was a hard worker, taking enjoyment in his work. He and his brother-in-law,

Cletus Timmerman, helped clear "the islands" in the Mississippi River for the building of Lock & Dam 11. Louis also custom handpicked corn for the local farmers to help pay for his wedding.

He married Olivia Margaret Flogel on Jan. 26, 1938, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dickeyville, Wis.; she preceded him in death on Aug. 31, 1986. He always missed his Olivia. Together, Louis and Olivia farmed south of Dubuque on a farm that is now part of the Mines of Spain. Later, they farmed near Zwingle and lived in St. Donatus.

He was a member of the St. Donatus Church and was an usher on Sundays.

Louis' loves were his wife, family, farming and horses. He never officially retired from farming and continued to help his sons until he was not able to drive. He worked with his horses up until he was in his 80s.

Surviving are his children, Donald (JoAnn) Wiederholt, of Cuba City, Wis., Mary Jane (Loras) LeConte, of Las Vegas, Eugene (Linda) Wiederholt, of Zwingle, Betty (Rich Foulk) Recker, of Crossville, Tenn., and Roger (Connie) Wiederholt, of Bernard;

22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Irma Wiederholt, of Kieler, Wis.

He also was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Donald Wiederholt; two brothers, John and Joseph Wiederholt; and four sisters, Rosie Placke, Irene Timmerman, Alice Timmerman and Mary Timmerman.
