Germaine was born on May 4, 1925 in Worthington, Iowa to Frank and Erma (Feltes) Haas. She attended school in Masonville, IA. After graduating from Manchester High School, she moved to Dubuque, Iowa.
Germaine was employed by A.Y. McDonald before leaving to attend cosmetology school. She worked for Stampher Salon until moving to Masonville, IA to purchase the CC Mosher store. Four years later she returned to Dubuque and was employed by St. Regis Paper Company for 17 years until an injury forced her retirement.
Germaine and her husband “Bud” enjoyed several winters in Corpus Christi, Texas. During her retirement, she spent many years as a Walmart greeter which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Germaine had a passion for playing cards with euchre and cribbage being her favorites. If you mentioned cards she would say “I’ll get the deck.” In her spare time, Germaine loved working on puzzles, crocheting, planting flowers and babysitting her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons Gary (Mary Jo) Schroeder of Dubuque, IA and Michael (Diana) Gavin of Ankeny, IA; her daughters Sandy (Norm) Ellerman of Dubuque, IA and Deb (Don) Hocking of Epworth, Iowa; and a son in law Tom Francois. She has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon “Bud” Gavin; her parents Frank and Erma Haas; her sister Mildred; 4 brothers, Leo Haas, Gerald Haas, LaVern Haas, and Cletus Haas; and 2 daughters Pat (Tom) Francois and Jackie (David) Cue.

The family would like to extend a warm thank you to Dubuque County Hospice especially Edna and all the staff at Stonehill Care Center for their compassionate care during her final days.
