Obituary for Alice Fuhrman (Schiltz)

Alice (Schiltz) Fuhrman, 84, formerly of Carter Road, Dubuque, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Kahl Retirement Home, Davenport.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1870 St. Ambrose Street, Dubuque, with Father Steve Rosonke presiding. Friends may call at the church for the wake service from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7. Interment will follow the funeral in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.
Born Nov. 4, 1933 in Dubuque, she was the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Nachtman) Schiltz. She was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, attended Clarke College and was 1958 graduate of the University of Iowa. She received her Master’s degree from Western Illinois University, Macomb.
She married Robert Fuhrman on Oct. 5, 1968 and they were the parents of one son, Dr. Robert Fuhrman, Davenport. Mrs. Fuhrman was preceded in death by her husband.
Mrs. Fuhrman taught physical education in Walled Lake, Mich., Kenosha, Wis., Galesburg, Ill., and Mason City before returning to Dubuque. She taught at Senior High School from 1969 until she retired in 1997. Among her students and, many former students she was affectionately known as “Sarge.”
Always an athlete, she was an avid swimmer, played recreational league softball in her youth and enjoyed snow skiing. Any water-related activity on the Mississippi River pleased her.
Surviving in addition to her son are two brothers, Rocky (Ann) Schiltz of Waco, Texas, Loras (Lana) Schiltz of Rockford, Illinois; and three sisters, Ethel (Tom) Brant, Deland, Fla., Lillian (Raymond) Kevane, McAllen, Tex., and Joanne (Ed) Breen, Marion, Ind. She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Dubuque.
