Obituary for Leonard L Shepherd

Leonard L Shepherd
Leonard L. Shepherd, 86, formerly of Dubuque, IA, died August 22, 2018, at Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility, Naperville, IL.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Thursday, August 30 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road, Dubuque, IA, with Pastor Peter Marshall officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Leonard was born March 11, 1932, in Galesburg, IL, the son of Fred and Dora (Dodd) Shepherd. He married Helen Hanson of Rock Island, IL, May 31, 1959. He served his country in the Navy, and attended Allied Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1956 from their drafting program. He worked for John Deere for 35 years, both in Moline, IL, and Dubuque, IA, where he retired in July of 1992.

He led his family to the Lord and persevered as a young widowed father, after Helen died of cancer, raising their two teenage children to adulthood. He was an artist who enjoyed painting a variety of subjects, including portraits of his children, grandchildren and even the Mona Lisa and American Gothic. He often painted murals for Vacation Bible School at Dubuque Bible Church where he also ushered and taught Sunday School for many years. He had a great sense of humor, loved his family, and took great joy in his grandsons – he could often be seen playing Batman, Ninja Turtles, cowboy, teacher, and other games with them.

He is survived by his son, John (Julie) Shepherd of Aurora, IL, daughter, Mary Shepherd of Davenport, IA; his grandchildren, Jeremy (Madeline) Shepherd of Ann Arbor, MI and Jordan Shepherd of Chicago, IL; and his sister, Barbara Carmen of Cheboygan, MI.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two sisters, and seven brothers.

His family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility for their professional and loving care and support over the last several years.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Tabor Hills, 1347 Crystal Avenue, Naperville, IL 60563.
