Obituary for William E Olson

William E. (Bill) Olson, a long-time resident of Dubuque, died peacefully on Thursday, June 7 at Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa, IA. Per Bill’s request his body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. There will be a visitation held at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road on Wednesday, June 27 from 5-7 PM.
Born in 1928 in Milwaukee, WI, Bill graduated from the University of Dubuque with a teaching degree and then earned his masters degree at the University of Iowa.
He met Barbara Dewey in the church choir at Westminster Church, married her in 1954 and had two children. After running Olson’s Toy and Hobby Shop with his father until 1963 he taught for many years in high schools in Whatcheer, Western Dubuque and Dubuque, IA, retiring in 1992. He then operated Bill’s Sports Cards until completely retiring in 2000.
Bill loved golfing, stamp collecting and especially spending time with his friends and family, which included numerous animals. He was an avid Packers and Hawkeyes fan.
After his retirement Bill volunteered at Finley Hospital.
He is survived by his daughter Sue (Hans) Becker and son Steve (Deanna) Olson as well as grandchildren Joseph and Ben Olson and Terry Becker, and great-grandchildren TJ, Savannah and Keatyn Becker.
He was preceded in death by Barbara, his wife of 63 years
