Nicola Cannavo, 84, of Dubuque passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018 surrounded by the family he loved. Kennedy Road where a parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Nicola was born in Termini Imerese, Sicily on July 3, 1933, the son of Francesco (Concetta) Cannavo. His mother passing while he was young, Nicola helped support the family, setting the foundation for his work ethic. Nicola married Maria (Cirino) Cannavo on July 1, 1953 and they began their life together in Sicily. Nicola and Maria eventually made their way from Sicily to Connecticut where he started his family, working two jobs to make ends meet. Eventually they moved to Dubuque, IA where Nicola began work in a successful family owned restaurant. He was part owner of Marco's Italian restaurant, alongside his brothers, sister, and brother-in-law for 35 years. Nicola also loved to travel, next to his family his favorite thing in the world was the beach. He enjoyed laughing as he was known to be a jokester and loved to tell stories. Nicola would never cook at home as he cooked all day at the restaurant but he would always provide Maria his opinions at home for her cooking, all in good fun of course. Nothing was more important than family to Nicola and he was the rock that held it together, we will miss his smile, laughter and wisdom.
Survivors include his wife Maria Cannavo of Dubuque; three children Francesco (Tammy) Cannavo of Marion, IA and their children Angela (Tony), Nicolas, and Patricia; Leonardo (Theresa) Cannavo of Blue Grass, IA and their children Vincenzo, and Elizabeth; Lisa (Robert) Gassman of Dubuque and their children Noah, and Natalie ; two sisters Rosetta Cannavo and Carmelina Giunta; one brother Carmelo (Tanina) Cannavo; brothers and sisters-in-law Josie (Gino) Sileci, Frank Cirino, Philip (Nicolina) Cirino, Carmela Cirino, Giacomina Cannavo.
He was preceded in death by his sister Lina Saldi; a brother Giuseppe Cannavo; Sister-in-law Rosa Zanca; brothers-in-law Andrew Cirino, Louie Cirino and Marco Giunta; niece Patricia Cannavo; and two nephews Lenny Cirino and Lee Cirino.
A Nicola Cannavo Memorial Fund has been established.
