Obituary for Larry M Steve

Larry M Steve
Larry Michael Steve passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 9, 2018 after a courageous battle with leukemia.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 14 at Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7:30 p.m., Wednesday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road.
Born October 11, 1951 to Burt and Maxine Steve, Larry was a unique and caring individual who touched the lives of all who knew him. Always quick with a joke or coining a unique nickname to people he met, Larry definitely made an impression wherever he was.
A graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, Larry went on the attend Hawkeye Community College. In 1972, he married the love of his life, Marie Pregler. One year later, his daughter Angela (Pete) was born and in 1979 his son Chad (Jessica) was born.
Larry devoted his life to working at, and eventually owning, Burt Steve & Son Garage. Originally Center Grove Garage, Larry's father, Burt, moved and renamed the shop to include his son the year Larry was born, where it remains today.
Larry loved towing and trucking. He dedicated his life to helping people in need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He was proud of sharing stories about his towing experiences. He also had an infinite love for truck shows - even entertaining the idea of "busting out" of the Iowa City Hospitals to attend one of his favorite truck shows. As much as he loved his career, he loved his grandchildren, Sophia, Scout, and Cash (whom he lovingly called 'the monkeys') even more - taking them on rides in the tow truck and hot rod, his most recent project. In addition, Larry enjoyed his daily breakfast 'dates' with his friends and the staff at McDonald's on JFK, both of the Sunshine Family Restaurants, and Panera.

In addition to his grandchildren, 'Tootsie,' as they lovingly called him, had a special love and bond with his sister-in-law (whom he practically raised and treated as his own daughter), Judy (Pregler) Thorpe and nieces Allie and Abby, who he treated as his own grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Chad (Jessica); grandchildren, Sophia Liesen, Scout, and Cash Steve; sister, Sherri (Bill) Giesemann; sister-in-law, Judy Thorpe; nieces, Allie, and Abby Thorpe, and Emily (Giesemann) Van Wyk; and nephew, Jeremy Giesemann.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burt and Maxine (Nolan); wife Marie; and daughter, Angela.
Larry's family would like to thank the following special people in Larry's life for taking such amazing care of him during his brief battle with leukemia - April Till, Hospice of Dubuque - especially Edna, Iowa City Hospitals and staff, Mercy Hospitals and staff, as well as the many, many friends who took time out of their lives to visit Larry while he was undergoing treatment.
In lieu of flowers, a Larry Steve Memorial Fund has been established.
