Obituary for Armella A Meyer (Link)

Filled with grit, grace, humor and uncompromising determination until the end, we lost our gentle mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend on April 25, 2018. After 97 years of a well loved and worn heart, Armella Anna Meyer passed away peacefully at Hawkeye Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Holy Spirit Parish Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Dwayne Thoman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. where a parish scripture wake service will be recited at 7:30. A visitation will also be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Armella was born on January 26, 1921 to Edward and Avalona (Stillmunkes) Link. She grew up on a farm in rural Balltown, the oldest of five siblings. On August 16, 1945, Armella married Emil Meyer and together they raised six children in Dubuque. Armella worked at Kretz's Restaurant in her younger years and did housekeeping for many families in the Dubuque area until retirement. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Rosary Society, Dubuque Lifetime Center, and many different euchre card clubs.
Armella loved to dance in her early years at Melody Mill, play euchre (because she was very good at it!), listen to Danny O'Donnell and go on family picnics at Eagle Point Park. Lawrence Welk was one of her most favorite Saturday night TV shows. She was skilled in cross-stitching and was always busy with numerous projects. Most precious were her cross-stitched Christmas ornaments she made each year for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gardening was one of Armella's favorite past times, her peonies and African violets were beautiful. She canned tomatoes, peaches and her favorite rhubarb jam, and was amazing at baking coffee cake, homemade bread, snickerdoodle cookies and banana cream pie.
Surviving are her children, James (Norma) Meyer of Kailua Hawaii, Tom (Kathy) Meyer of Dubuque, IA, John "Jack" (Ann) Meyer of Asbury, IA, Karen (Steve) Plein of Dubuque, IA, Jerry (Karen) Meyer of Menominee, IL and Jeff (Sheila) Meyer of Dubuque, IA; 15 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way; her sister, Luella (LaVern) Pape; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy Link, Lucille Link and Arnold (Shirley) Meyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband Emil Meyer on May 3, 1982; her parents Edward and Avalona Link; her mother and father-in-law, George and Susan (Lucas) Meyer; her brothers, Lavern Link, Norman (Joann) Link and Delbert Link; her brother and sisters-in-law, Irene (Donald) Link, Dorothy (Cletus) Fincel and Melvin (Millie) Meyer.
In lieu of flowers, a Armella Meyer memorial fund has been established.
Special thanks to the staff of Hawkeye Care Center for all the loving care Armella received these past 3 years, especially Jill, Amanda, Sherri, Jason, Chris, Nadine, Amy and Julie. Also, a special thank you to Hospice Care of Dubuque for their compassion and care.
