Obituary for Meta A Ginnow (Heling)

Meta A. Ginnow, 96, formerly of Omro, Wisconsin, passed away at 5:30pm on Sunday, Dec 3, 2017, at Heritage Manor-Hawkeye Care Center, Dubuque, IA, surrounded by her family.
Friends may call from 9:00am to 10:00am on Friday, Dec 8, 2017 at St Peter Lutheran Church, 3200 Asbury Rd, Dubuque IA. The church service will start at 10am with Pastor DeWayne Teig officiating. Burial will take place after the service at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.
Meta was born on May 6, 1921, in Belle Plaine, WI, daughter of Frank and Laura (Kruse) Heling, the oldest of six children. Meta graduated from Clintonville High School in 1938. She attended the Oshkosh Teaching College for two years and then taught in a one-room country school for four years. Meta moved to Milwaukee, WI, where she was employed at the Milwaukee Stamping Company, working a press punch making parts for gas masks and bombs for World War II. Meta joined the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps when she enrolled as a student at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Oshkosh, from 1945-1948. Meta graduated in May 1948 as a registered nurse.
Meta married Edward Ginnow at St Martin’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine WI on Nov 3, 1948 and they divorced on June 5, 1984. Meta was a stay-at-home mom for the first seven years of their marriage. After both daughters were in school, she worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh for 28 years before she retired.
Meta loved her grandchildren and she tried to spend quality time with each one. She attended their school and sports events, went on family camping and fishing trips, played cards or board games, supervised making and decorating cookies, and enjoyed reading books with them.
Meta belonged to the Wedgewood Tuesday Ladies golf league, the Omro bowling league, and an Oshkosh square dance group. She actively participated in several service groups in Omro, including the Omro Thrift Store and the Ladies Guild at Grace Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Winnebago County Extension-Homemakers for 60 years and worked as a volunteer nurse at EAA and at Camp Hiwela (Wild Rose).
She took several craft and cooking classes at the Fox Valley Vocational-Technical School and learned how to knit, crochet, tat, needlepoint, crewel, quilt, make stuffed bears out of recycled mink coats, cane chairs and refinish furniture. Meta was a great baker and she was known for her homemade stollen, pies, and scones.
Meta is survived by two daughters, Jane (Jim) Petersen of Dubuque, IA; and Anna (Jim) Malek, of Winneconne, WI; five grandchildren: David (Melissa) Petersen, Daniel (Trisha) Petersen, Karen (Chris) Gordon, Franklin Malek, and Danielle (Justin) Schmick; and seven great-grandchildren: Kurtis, Katelyn, Hailey, and Landon Petersen; and Harper, Theodore, and Penelope Schmick. She is also survived by sisters-in-laws Edythe Schrindl of Oak Creek, WI; Marjorie (Dennis) Luker of Winneconne, WI; Ardene (Effie) Kopper of Macon, GA; and brother-in-law Vernon (Julie) Moldenhauer of Oshkosh WI, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Edwin Heling, Roland Heling, and Frank Heling Jr; her sisters, Esther Heidke and Mavis Heling; and several sisters- and brothers-in-laws.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Meta’s name will be set up to help fund college expenses for a local nursing student. Donations can also be made to Hospice of Dubuque or to a memorial of your choice. Please address any memorial donation to Jane Petersen.
The family wishes to thank all the wonderful, caring staff at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque and the Hawkeye Care Center, and the services of Hospice of Dubuque. Meta and her family felt your genuine compassion and love. A special thank you to everyone for all your visits, cards, and prayers during Meta’s final months in Dubuque.
