Erica L. “Peggy” McDermott, 86, died Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Oak Park Place.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 18 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rev. Thomas Ascheman, SVD officiating and Rev. Joseph E. McDermott, SVD con celebrating. A Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Peggy was born on January 24, 1931 in Germany, the daughter of Anna and Heinrich Casares.
She married Thomas McDermott on May 12, 1962. He preceded her in death on June 20, 2014.
Peggy was a deeply religious; one of her passions in life was building mission churches. Together with her husband they built four mission churches in the Serengeti Plains of Africa, Paraguay and the Philippines.
Though Erica and Tom had no children of their own, they delighted in adopting foreign babies to support and educate. Peggy was a woman of prayer who centered her entire day around her personal relationship with God. She and her friend, Linda prayed the rosary daily by telephone.
Peggy’s other daily goals consisted of reading, exercise, and playing the wii. She was a very good bowler, but would never boast. She loved boating, tennis, volleyball, racquet ball, swimming, and was very competitive in all sports.
Surviving are her brothers and sisters-in-law, Bea (Richard) Soens, of Dubuque, Rev. Joseph E. McDermott SVD, Patrick (Patricia) McDermott, both of Epworth, IA, Michael McDermott, of Farley, Linus (Shirley) McDermott, of Cascade, IA, Maureen McDermott, of Manchester, MO, and Madeline McDermott, of Menominee, IL.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law, Ruth and Ambrose McDermott; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Joan and Marvin “Jim” Ernst, Helen Ann and Donald Kraemer, Frances (David) Raab, Lois (McQuillen) McDermott, Jerome McDermott, Anthony McDermott, and Chuck McDermott.
The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road is assisting the family.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Cao and his nurse Melissa for their compassionate care and also to Charlotte, Diane and the angles from Hospice of Dubuque for their love given to Peggy. Also a special thanks to the staff and residents at Oak Park Place for their love and friendship.
