Obituary for Jeanette M Elgin (Nelson)

Jeanette M Elgin (Nelson)
Jeanette May Elgin, 86, of Dubuque died Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Mercy Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Raphael Cathedral with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 pm Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.
Jeanette was born December 11, 1930 in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Oscar and Esther (Vorwald) Nelson. She graduated from St. Patrick’s Grade School and later furthered her education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls.
On November 17, 1947, she married David J. Elgin at St. Raphael Cathedral. This Friday will be their 70th wedding anniversary.
Jeanette started her career as a teen at the Battery Factory, as well as other teenage jobs. As a teen she also sang at the Circle Night Club (where her mother, Esther, worked) with many unknown bands on their way up.
After marrying Dave, she became a sales rep for the Avon Corp. for over 40 years. She finished her career working for the Dubuque Unified School District for more than 20 years.
Jeanette was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved babies and animals. She loved singing, dancing, whistling, going to musicals, playing Euchre and Rummy and doing crossword puzzles. She also loved traveling and going on vacations with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren - especially to Disney World.
She will be remembered for her everlasting and intense love of her husband, Dave, endless love of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; her gifts of Avon for birthdays and Christmas for over three decades and her dedication to prepare and provide Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners for family and friends for decades.
She was a 50 year member of Holy Ghost, was active with the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, and volunteered in the Dubuque community, including at the Carnegie-Stout Library for over 10 years.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, David Elgin of Dubuque; three sons, David Joseph (Mary) Elgin of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Drew Michael (Tina) Elgin of Mequon, WI, and Dennis Thomas (Roma) Elgin of Seal Beach, CA; five daughters, Denice Louise (Kevin) Rhomberg of Mentor, OH, Doreen Esther (Jeff) Barta of Cedar Rapids, Denette May Kellogg of Dubuque, Darla Agnes (Gregory Maisel) Elgin of Woodbury, MN and Darcy Rose (Randy) Jones of Woodbury, MN.
She is also survived by (23) grandchildren, (32) great grandchildren, and two brothers, LeRoy Nelson of Dubuque and Thomas Nelson of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Diane DeMaio and her sister, Darlene Allendorf.
