Obituary for Joe

Joseph D. Vogt, 94, of Dubuque, Iowa was peacefully called home on Monday, November 6, 2017 at Bethany Home. Visitation by family and friends will be from 9 am to 10:45 am on Friday, November 10, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish- Sacred Heart Church, 2215 Windsor Avenue, followed by the funeral Mass at 11 am. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery where military rites will be accorded.

Joe was born on May 6, 1923 in Dubuque, son of Joseph and Mary (Stecher) Vogt. He married the love of his life, Martina Winter, on October 8, 1949, at Saint Patrick’s Church in Dubuque. Sadly, she was called home ahead of him on December 25, 2010. They were blessed with four children, seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Joe proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, a veteran of the Normandy and Belgium battlefields. Prior to and after his military service, he worked at the Dubuque Packing Company until his retirement. In his free time, he enjoyed renovating homes and restoring automobiles. He also enjoyed dancing with Martina at the Melody Mill, Dubuque County Fairgrounds, and other dance band venues. They also enjoyed traveling throughout the USA on charter bus tours and bowling at Riverside Bowl with relatives and friends in various bowling leagues over the decades. They were lifelong members of Sacred Heart Parish. Joe was also a long-standing member of the Dubuque Boat Club.

Those left to cherish Joe’s memory include his and Martina’s children: Don (Mary Jo) Vogt of Dubuque; Bob (Jean) Vogt of Hazel Green, Wisconsin; Joe (Sherri) Vogt of Dubuque; and, Judy (Dave) Tully of Asbury; grandchildren: Jennifer Vogt (Jeremy Magrath), Tricia (Bill) Berg, David Tully, Katie (Tom) Purcell, Christie (Chad) Chappell, Hillary Vogt (Scott Erwin), and, Joseph (Audrey) Vogt; great-grandchildren: Aria Vogt; Jack, Alex, and Nathan Berg; Carleen Jo, Caydee, and Clayton Chappell; Colin Purcell; Quinn Erwin; and, Lena and Dylan Magrath; sister-in-law Ann Kemp; brother-in-law and sister in-law Carl and Kay Winter; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his beloved Martina, Joe was preceded in passing by his parents; his siblings and their spouses: John (Mary) Vogt, Antone Vogt, Hilda Vogt, Marie (Ralph) Cremer, Eleanor (Anthony) Kemp, Leo (Marie) Vogt, Helen (Francis) Wieser, Josephine (Henry Wilmot, George Cadwallader), and, Eldon (Ethel) Vogt; Martina’s parents: Alois and Mary (Pfeiler) Winter; and, brother-in-law: Gerald Winter.

A Joseph D. Vogt Memorial Fund has been established, which will be distributed among his and Martina’s favorite caregiving agencies.

Joe’s family would like to express its sincere appreciation to the staff of Bethany Home and Hospice of Dubuque for the thoughtful care provided him in recent years and months. The family also wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. Matthew Kirkendall and his assistant, Kate Vickerman, for their expert counsel and treatment that helped Joe live well into his 90’s. And finally, a special thank you to his many friends, former coworkers, and neighbors whose company he enjoyed over his many years with us.
