Arthur Clyde  Winne
Arthur C. (Art) Winne, 89, of Asbury passed away on Sunday, October 22, at Luther Manor Grand Meadows. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
Art was born June 28, 1928, at the Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids, son of Arthur C. Winne Sr. and Eugenia Olsen Winne. He married his one true love, Nancy M. Wilson on April 17, 1982, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
As a young boy in Cedar Rapids, Art was very active in the Boy Scouts of America. He earned his Eagle Scout in 1940 receiving a letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt honoring him for being the youngest Eagle Scout in the country at that time. As an Eagle Scout he received the bronze palm, gold palm, silver palm, 2nd bronze palm and Order of the Arrow. He also received a 10 year veteran award. Art’s first job was in the 8th grade as a staff member at Camp Waubeek scout camp in Cedar Rapids.
Art pre-enlisted in the U.S. Army when in high school. Until graduation from high school he worked at Cherry Burrell as Assistant to Machine Operator. Upon graduation he officially entered the U.S. Army in June 1946. After training he was sent to Japan where he served until President Truman declared the cessation of hostilities. He received an honorable discharge of the U.S. Army in December, 1947.
Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army he returned to Cherry Burrell under the Serviceman Re-Employment Act where he worked at a Process Engineer until 1962.
Art and his family moved to Dubuque in 1962 where he began employment at A. Y. McDonald Mfg. as a General Foreman of Machining & Assembly. He retired from A.Y. McDonald Mfg. in 1992 as a Vice President.
Art was very active in the Dubuque YMCA as a volunteer where he started a competitive swimming program and served as Coach, Referee, and Administrator of the Red Cross Water Safety Program for Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
He was awarded the Moco Mercer Outstanding Sports Contributor Award by the Dubuque Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Art loved the time he spent throughout the years with his family and friends fishing and wilderness camping both on the Mississippi and in Canada.
He was a recognized wilderness camper. He spent 43 years wilderness camping, fishing, and hunting in north western Ontario.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; five children, Deborah (Barry) Blair of Peosta; Thomas Winne (Nancy) of Mesa, Colorado; Eric (Shelley) Winne of Even, Colorado; Susan (Jay) Powers of Denver, Colorado; Sherry (Randy) Brown of Schaumburg, Illinois; and two step children, Eric (Toni) Gullett of Polk City, Iowa; Sean (Amy) Wilson of Roanoke, Virginia. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 stepsisters and 2 stepbrothers.
