Obituary for Bob

Robert D. McCarty 92, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Dubuque Specialty Care. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Holy Spirit Pastorate, Holy Trinity Church with Rev. Dwayne Thoman and Rev. Rick Halvorson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military rites accorded by the American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Robert was born on May 5, 1925 in San Diego, CA, the son of David and Iva (Wickens) McCarty. He entered the military at the age of 17 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was employed by John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 1988. On February 9, 1952, Robert was married to Louise Herbst at Assumption Church, Zwingle. She preceded him in death on September 20, 2006. Robert was a craftsman who could fix anything, an avid bicyclist until the age of 91 and a NASCAR enthusiast who built and raced cars. He was a long time member of Holy Trinity parish, the American Legion Post #6 of Dubuque and the “Slo-Pokes” car club.
Surviving are his children Steven McCarty of Colorado, Debra (Dennis) Giese of Peosta, IA, Dennis (Rina Hovden) McCarty of Santa Rosa, CA, Tim (Sheila) McCarty of Dubuque, IA and Mary Beth (Randy) Halvorson of Bernard, IA; his grandchildren Sara Kruser, Cory (Amanda) Giese, Meggan Bennett, Jessica (James) Kelly, Pauline (Matt) Flood, Tyler (Tiffany) Halvorson, Acacia (Aaron) Schmitt, Abigail and Cody Halvorson; 11 great grandchildren

The McCarty family wishes to thank the nurses and staffs at Hospice of Dubuque and Dubuque Specialty Care. Also, a special thank you to the “Cook Lady” (Ronni) for her wonderful in home care.
