Obituary for Rose Marie Chun

Rose Marie Chun
Rose Marie (Peschang) Chun, 90, died of natural causes on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Stonehill Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial be held 10 a.m., Saturday, October 14 at St. Columbkille church where visitation will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Rose Marie Chun was born on July 9, 1927 in Dubuque, the youngest daughter of Nicholas and Jennie (Lee) Peschang. She attended St Mary’s Elementary School, Immaculate Conception Academy, Clarke University and the University of Minnesota. After graduation, she entered the post-war work force as a registered dietitian at Rockford Memorial Hospital. This was followed by another dietitian position at Chicago’s Presbyterian Hospital.

Mrs. Chun was the wife of the late Dr. Newton Chun. They married in Chicago in 1952. After a short residence in Honolulu, her husband’s birth place, the couple relocated to Dubuque and set down roots. “If Newt and I had stayed in Hawaii, we would have ended up raising a clan of beach bums,” was the stock answer she gave to those who inquired about this curious change of scenery.

Although she raised six children, Mrs. Chun was also active in community service, including a stint as president of the Dubuque County Medical Auxiliary and serving on the Alumni Board at Clarke University. Her participation as a judge at Telegraph Herald’s Recipe Roundup lasted for decades.

A longtime member of the international travel organization Friendship Force, Mrs. Chun visited many countries. Despite this penchant for adventure, the native daughter never missed the opportunity to share her civic pride with foreign hosts. She once told an overbearing Frenchman that while the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral were nice enough, they paled in comparison to such Dubuque landmarks as the 4th Street Elevator and Shot Tower.

Rose Marie Chun is survived by her six children. This includes two daughters and four sons; Nicolette (Kenneth Van Vleck) Chun of Palo Alto, CA, Danielle (Michael) Schrenk of Cincinnati, OH, Rene (Jolande Boot) Chun of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, Dr. Noel (Dr. Mary Jo Ford) Chun of Manhattan Beach, CA, Guy (Sandi) Chun of Albuquerque, NM, and Jon (Katherine Elkins) Chun of Gambier, OH.

There are also fourteen surviving grandchildren: Aidan and Alec Van Vleck; Ava and Owen Chun; Delaney and Ryan Schrenk; Cheyenne Chun, Dakota and Sequoia Ford; Nicholas and Miranda Chun; Beckett, Mateo and Nicholas Elkins.

The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
