Melvin was born on February 24, 1928 in Farley, Iowa, the son of John Thomas and Elizabeth (Pins) Leibold. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Farley High School in 1945. Melvin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 3, 1953, he married Virginia “Ginny” Smith in Farley, Iowa. She preceded him in death on November 16, 2011. Melvin worked for Meadow Gold Dairy delivering to schools, restaurants, stores, and scout camps; and later was a route salesman for Kretschmer Tredway; enjoying the many people he met along his routes. He was a faithful and dedicated Catholic and a lifetime member of Nativity parish. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 510 of Dubuque and the American Legion Post 656 of Farley, Iowa, for 60 plus years. Melvin was a kind, gentle and caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved to go dancing with his sweetheart Ginny, enjoyed the backyard patio cookouts, preparing waffles, attending many of the grandchildren events, relaxing at Leisure Lake, playing euchre, word search puzzles, and the many road trips he made with family and friends. His favorite trip was to the ice cream shop! He volunteered at Nativity Church and the Knights of Columbus for many years. In September 2011, Melvin was given the opportunity to be a part of the Honor Flight of Greater Dubuque, for his service and sacrifice for his country.
