Obituary for Carlyle Said

Carlyle E. “Carl” Said, 88, of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at home, surrounded by his daughters.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Thursday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 6:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Nativity with Fr. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bellevue, IA, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Post 6 of Dubuque.
Carl was born June 16, 1929, in Maquoketa, son of Alva and Ethel (Schoemaker) Said. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1948. He married Dorothy Michel on January 23, 1951 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Bellevue. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2005.
He entered the US Naval Reserves on April 3, 1954 and was honorably discharged as a Machinist Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class on April 2, 1958.
Carl was a tool and die maker for over 25 years, retiring in 1980. As a man with a drive to work, he then worked as a greenskeeper at Lacoma Golf Course for over 20 years.
He enjoyed tinkering around the house and yard, visiting and helping neighbors, but most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed Ashley’s volleyball years. He also loved gardening, and baking his cakes and pecan pies.
Carl is survived by two daughters, Nancy (BG Robert (ret.)) Felderman and Jane (Mark) Smith, all of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Jacob (Martina) Felderman, Jamie (Scott) Borland, Ashley (Dallas Rolwes) Smith and B.J. Smith; and three great grandchildren, Alexander, Adeline, and Mirabel.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Carl Engel; brothers Louie Sade, Ed Said, sister Lee Krier, and step-brother, Bill Engel.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque, whom the family thanks for the compassionate care of Carl and support of the family.
