Obituary for Elmer E Steffen

Elmer E. Steffen, 80, of Dubuque, died Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 14 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 13 from 4-7 p.m. at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

Elmer was born on January 3, 1937 to Frank and Evelyn (Hoeger) Steffen. He grew up in Peosta, Iowa and graduated from Peosta High School. On August 10, 1963, he married Phyllis Coohey at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. They spent 53 wonderful years together.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1961. He worked at John Deere Dubuque Works, retiring from there in 1992. Elmer also owned and operated the Corral Motel.

Elmer was a lifelong, avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, and Wahlert High School basketball. They attended games for 53 years.

Besides sports, Elmer enjoyed riding his motorcycle, camping, fishing, and boating. Spending winters in Florida and spending time with his grandchildren were also at the top of his list.

Surviving is his wife, Phyllis; their children Jaqueline Tully, JoAnn Steffen, and Julie (Ken) Haugen, all of Dubuque; grandchildren Lucas and Elizabeth Tully, Paige (Matthew Sabers), Jack and William Haugen; siblings Loras (Mary Ann) Steffen, Mary Kay Shanahan, both of Dubuque, Bernita Kaiser, of Hazel Green, WI, and David (Eileen) Steffen of Cascade, IA; and in laws Robert Coohey and James (Betty) Coohey of Dubuque, Kathy (Robert) Sherman of Springfield, IL, Yvonne Coohey of West Des Moines, IA, Dennis Charipar of Swisher, IA, Anna Mae Steffen of Cascade, and Nancy Steffen and Vivian Steffen of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Leon, Kenneth, and Donald Steffen, and in laws Merlin Kaiser, Mary Coohey, Marie and Edwin Lindauer, and Ellie Charipar.

The family would like to thank Dr. Andrea Ries and her nurses for their exceptional care and compassion.
