Averle J. Wilson, 91, of Dubuque died Friday, May 19, 2017 at home. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 pm Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Maquoketa, where visitation will also be held Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.
Averle was born August 3, 1925 in Andrew, Iowa, daughter of William and Clara (Deppe) Hager. She attended the Maquoketa schools and graduated in 1943. She was employed that summer by the Davenport Newspapers as correspondent and circulation manager for the Jackson County Area.
In the early 1960’s she opened a party shop and printing business. In 1972 she started the advertising paper, The Shopper Stopper, now called The Shopper. Also among her business ventures, she owned the Eastern Iowa Service Bureau Collection Agency and H & R Block Income Tax Service.
Selling her businesses in 1980, she took many trips visiting her son Gary in California and Greg in Australia. In 1993 she was hired as Administrative Assistant at the Dubuque Water Plant and worked until she was 78 years old. Since then, she has enjoyed traveling, social events with her friends, her home in Dubuque, and was an avid shopper with her best friend, Thelma.
Surviving are her son, Greg of Isle of Capri, Australia; sister, Dolores (Dick) Dominetta of Los Angeles; nieces and nephews, Pat (Greg) Lane of Stillwater, MN., Karen (Steve} Gray, Carla (Steve) Schilling of Muscatine; Bill (Beth) Hager of Glenview, IL, Deb (Kevin) Ritenour of Preston, Laura Jensen of Pahrump, NV; Brock Hager of Des Moines; Bruce Hager of Davenport, Amy and Linda Dominetta of Los Angeles; Carol (David) Mazzatta of Bainbridge Island, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her son Gary, who died of cancer at the age 50; a grandson, Sean Michael Wilson; her parents; brother, Larry: brother and sister in law, Bill and Doris Hager; sister, Vera and brother in law, Wayne Sissel of Mustanine.
