Gregg W. Marolf, 64, of Dubuque died Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the University of Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church where visitation will be held Wednesday from 3 to 8 pm. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, all in Dubuque.
Gregg was born November 22, 1952 in Davenport, Iowa, son of Waldo and JoAnne (Huss) Marolf. He graduated from Bettendorf High School in 1971. He received his Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Iowa, where he met his wife, Micki, in the marching band. He and Micki were married on May 21, 1977 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Music was his passion and profession. He was the band director for Drexler Middle School’s 5th and 6th grade bands, for 34 years. He also served as band director and general music teacher for Beckman High School, grades 5-8, for a short time. Gregg started hundreds of budding musicians during his time as a teacher, passing along his passion for music. He played in the Dubuque, Clinton, and Muscatine Symphonies, the Guy Lombardo Band, DSO Brass Quintet, Clarke University Band, Quad City Wind Ensemble, in the pit orchestra for many shows at the Grand Opera House, numerous other community bands and brass groups in the area; was a charter member of the Tri-State Wind Symphony, Julien Chamber Winds, and the Big Band Express. After Gregg suffered from a stroke, Micki helped him re-learn the tuba and he played several concerts with the New Horizons band. He also created a vast number of music arrangements for the many groups he participated in, and taught private lessons.
He is survived by his wife, Micki Marolf of Dubuque; children, Sara (Richard) Flannery of Green Bay, WI, Kimberly (Patrick) Gunderson of Chicago, IL, and Tyler (Jessica) Marolf of Davenport and three grandchildren, Jocelyn Christine Flannery, Liliana Hope Gunderson, and Lila Grace Marolf and granddaughter due in September.
He is also survived by his twin brother, Dane (Lynn) Marolf; brother in law, Dana (Patty) Christiansen; father in law, David Naber; and Micki’s siblings, Angel Naber of Marion, Julie (Bob) Axtell of Mt. Vernon and Jeff Naber of Marion; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Cherise Christiansen.
